Invest in youths and young ones to reduce poverty- Hon Abass

IBADAN – A Federal lawmaker, Hon Abass Adigun Agboworin (Ibadan North East/Ibadan South East) Federal Constituency, has lamented the increasing rate of unemployment, poverty and substance abuse among Nigerian Youths.

Hon Abass spoke on Friday at the “Meet up with your Representative” session organized by the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Oyo state chapter, held at Mapo Hall Ibadan.

He said Nigeria will not achieve any developmental goals if smart investments are not made in the Youths and the young people.

“Investing in our youths’ education, health and employment will ensure prospects for their own lives and the betterment of society. On the other hand, if we fail to make these investments now, we will further entrench poverty and ignorance for generations to come.”

He promised to facilitate the advancement of legislation in support of sustainable development in the Ibadan North East/South East constituency.

“As the person with the mandate to be your representative, I promise to facilitate the advancement of legislation in support of sustainable development in our constituency.”

In her speech, the Chairman, National Youths Council of Nigeria, Ambassador Adebobola Agbeja said the program is a quarterly interactive session organized by the youths to elicit feedback from their representatives.

“We are here to have an interactive session with our elected officers to have a sense of belonging. We want to know what each of them is doing especially for the youths who are our primary concern. Today is for the Federal Rep, Ibadan South East/North East, we want to know what he is doing in Abuja.

We don’t want to wait till another election period that they will come and campaign. We want to meet them to negotiate and decide what they will do and what we want.”

She commended Honourable Abass Adigun for his efforts so far at providing quality representation to his constituents.

“So far so good, he is the Vice-Chairman House Committee on Air Force, he was part of the Speaker’s entourage to Japan, he had moved a motion for the welfare of security personnel in the country, he has helped in the area of empowerment for the people in his constituency. He has also given scholarships and organized extra coachings for students. We are following him and we will encourage him to do more.”

In their separate goodwill messages, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Oyo state, Engnr Akeem Olatunji, PDP state Youths leaders, Asiwaju Adekola Adeoye, Ibadan South-East Coordinator of NOA, Mrs. Adewunmi, lauded the efforts of the National Youths Council of Nigeria at engaging the representatives with a view to hold them accountable to the people.
