IBADAN- A US Navy Veteran-turned lawmaker, Honourable Abass Adigun, whose alias Agboworin has no doubt become a household name in his Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency, is increasingly proving himself as a kind-hearted Philanthropist of note within and without his homestead.

The latest being his emotional appeal to traders in his constituency and in Oyo state, in general, to be compassionate and not hike the prices of foodstuff and other essentials as the world battles the Corona Virus pandemic.

Agboworin distributed over 12,000 face masks and more than 2,000 hand sanitizers to traders in markets in his constituency.

Speaking with newsmen after the distribution, the Vice-Chairman House Committee on Air Force was optimistic that the traders will not hike the prices of foodstuff so as not to aggravate the already tensed situation noting that the items were distributed to the beneficiaries in the livestock market at Molete, Owode Academy market, sack sellers at Oja’ ba market and others in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area on Saturday.

Known for his grassroots style of politics, Abass said traders in Ibadan North-East Local Government Area markets would get their items on Sunday, adding that fliers in English and Yoruba languages containing awareness messages were also given to traders in the markets.

He advised the traders to always wear the gloves and the face masks as well as rub the sanitizers on their hands, explaining to them that there was a high risk of transmission among the traders as they relate with a large number of people as well as deal in cash.

As a way of keeping the required social distancing, the Cancerian Lawmaker revealed the postponement of the scheduled commissioning of some projects in his constituency in compliance with the ban on social gatherings in the state.

He commended the governor of the state, Engineer Seyi Makinde, on the measures taken so far by the government to prevent an outbreak of the virus in the state.

“At this time of global emergency occasioned by coronavirus, it is important we sensitize the market women, traders and others in the informal sector of the economy on the need to imbibe hygienic practices to forestall the spread of the virus in the state.

“Governor Makinde belled the cat in this regard by directing the media unit led by the Commissioner for Information to take the campaign against COVID-19 to markets and create awareness about the virus among the operators in the informal sector.

“We are happy at the moment that we don’t have what the medical experts call community transition of the virus in the state. I believe that with these efforts from the government and from me, awareness will spread and the chances of rapid spread reduced in the state, ” he said.

The soft spoken and ever calm politician appealed to his constituents and residents in the state to ensure compliance with the new guidelines released by the state government, adding that it was for the good of the people that such measures were taken.
