Some football clubs who registered with the Oyo State Sports Council for the 2020 Aiteo Sports Competition have lamented the treatment meted out to them by the council after the competition failed to hold.
Speaking with Ametrocopy, some of the Club members said after the payment of #60,000 in February 2020, as registration fee for the Competition scheduled for May-June, 2020, the organizers called in June 2021 to inform them that the competition will no longer be holding due to the lockdown brought about by the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus.
According to them, they were informed that the current Champion of the Aiteo Competition, Shooting Stars Football Club, has been chosen to represent the state at the National level.
They therefore appealed to the state Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, to wade into the matter and work out a refund or a form of compensation for the Clubs.
When contacted, the Secretary to the Oyo state FA, Mr. Ojelowo confirmed to Ametrocopy that 24 clubs registered for the 2020 Aiteo Cup Competition but the outbreak of the pandemic hindered the tournament from holding.
According to him, the problem is not peculiar to Oyo state because only a few states with a smaller number of clubs were able to hold the competition due to the short period given by the National body to present the winners.
He however assured that the Sports Council is planning a mini-tournament for the affected clubs once repairs are completed at the stadiums.
Ojelowo also promised to carry the affected Clubs along in the plans to assuage their fears.
