Ibadan – A Structural and Civil Engineer, Engr Olaoye Adekunle has described the construction Output for the first quarter of 2025 as low compared with the Country’s infrastructure deficit.

He faulted the statement credited to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, that 52 percent of road construction projects ongoing under President Bola Tinubu are in the Northern part of the country.

Describing it as controversial, Adekunle noted that the Minister’s statement was being segregational and political.

Engr Adekunle, who is the Vice President, Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers spoke on The Landlords, the radio Edition, hosted by One Plot.

‘The bulk of the road networks in Nigeria lies in the Southern part of Nigeria and 70 percent of that bulk is begging for rehabilitation’, he noted.

The Vice President, Nigerian Institution of Highways and Transportation Engineers, believes the amount spent on construction of long stretch of roads like the Lagos-Calabar coastal road could be injected into rehabilitating roads linking CBDs across the country to foster business interactions.

‘You can imagine how easy it is to drive within the CBDs in Ibadan. Before, it was a dread to travel the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, but now, the road is good and the traffic is lighter’, Engr Adekunle submitted.

He however commended the ongoing road rehabilitation across Ibadan, describing it as a ‘good use of taxpayers’ money’.

He stressed the urgent need for the government to ensure traders are taken off the roads completely especially with the ongoing constructions, for their safety and for the maximum utilisation of the roads.

The Structural Engineer also baree his mind on Housing crisis and the proposed Oyo State Building Control Bill.
