Senator Dr. Yunus Akintunde’s Generous Donation Marks World Press Freedom Day

Ibadan – In a gesture of solidarity and support for the invaluable role played by journalists, Senator Dr. Yunus Akintunde has generously donated a set of office furniture to the League of Veteran Journalists in Oyo State NUJ Iyaganku.

The donation, made to mark the official unveiling of the newly renovated and refurbished offices of the League of Veteran Journalists House held recently at the Nigerian Union of Journalists Press Center Iyaganku Ibadan while also marking World Press Freedom Day 2024, underscores the importance of press freedom and the vital contributions of media professionals to society.

Representing Senator Yunus Akintunde at the event was Hon Kunle Olatunji his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity. The donation includes one office table, two coffee tables, one L-shaped settee, and two lounge chairs, all of which are set to enhance the working environment of the League of Veteran Journalists. This thoughtful contribution not only provides practical support but also serves as a symbolic recognition of the dedication and sacrifices made by journalists in upholding the principles of free speech and democratic values.

World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3rd, serves as a reminder of the fundamental human right to freedom of expression and the crucial role of a free press in fostering transparency, accountability, and democracy. It is a day to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, evaluate the state of press freedom around the world, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Senator Dr. Yunus Akintunde’s donation comes at a time when press freedom faces numerous challenges globally, including censorship, attacks on journalists, and attempts to undermine the independence of media organizations. By supporting the League of Veteran Journalists, Senator Akintunde not only acknowledges the importance of a free press but also reaffirms his commitment to upholding democratic values and promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

The League of Veteran Journalists in Oyo State NUJ Iyaganku led by Pa Banji Ogundele to express profound gratitude to Senator Dr. Yunus Akintunde for his generous donation. The office furniture will not only enhance the working conditions of the journalists but also serve as a constant reminder of the support and appreciation extended to them by the community.

Present at the occasion were notable Nigerians, among them a former Governor of Ogun State and veteran journalist Aremo Olusegun Osoba, Chief Niyi Akintola SAN who was the Chairman of the occasion, Pa Banji Ojo, Alhaji Kola Animasahun, Prince Adeseye Adesegun former Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Chief Mrs. Funsho Adegbola daughter of Chief Bola Ige, Alhaji Saani, Mr. Yomi Layinka former Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, Comrade Demola Babalola the Chairman of Oyo NUJ, Mr. Akeem Abass who represented Senator Sarafadeen Alli and several members of the League of Veteran Journalists and guests.

As we reflect on World Press Freedom Day 2024, let us reaffirm our commitment to defending the principles of press freedom, protecting journalists from harm, and promoting a vibrant and independent media sector that serves the public interest.
