Oyo to establish a Disability Commission soon

IBADAN – Oyo state government is to establish Disability Commission, employ educated People with Disability and empower the uneducated ones in the coming days.

The Executive Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde on Disability Matters, Barr. Adekambi Ayodele disclosed these during an exclusive chat with ametrocopy in Ibadan.

Barr. Adekambi also reiterated the approval of the Governor for the appointment of one person with disability in each of the Local Governments as a Supervisory Counselor.

“The Governor has written a letter to the Attorney General of the state. The legislators are going to amend the law that established the Local Governments in Oyo state and it’s going to be there that each person with a disability  will occupy the post of a Supervisory Counselor.”

“Again, you will recall that the Governor in his inaugural speech mentioned that we would have the Oyo state Disability Commission, it’s in the pipeline. The House of Assembly will be working together with our stakeholders, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Women Affairs, Ministry of Education together with NGOs working with People with Disabilities, the Nigerian Association of Special Teachers, we are going to have our stakeholders meeting sometime in the first quarter of next year which will establish the law.”

Barr. Adekambi further revealed that the state assembly will sometime around mid-2020 come up with the Equal Opportunity Bill that will establish the Disability Commission.

The Governor’s aide said every cluster of People with Disability interacts with the government through their leaders and heads adding that all the categories of disabilities will be represented in the employment and empowerment plans of the Makinde-led administration.

He pointed out that the celebration of the 2019 International Day of Persons with Disabilities which held on Dec 3 as a way of identifying with the people adding that it was the first of its kind in a long while in the history of the state.
