Ibadan – A former Secretary, Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Oyo State Branch, Surv. Omobolaji Akangbe, has described the recent demolition of over 400 shops at Alegongo market, Akobo, Ibadan, the Oyo state capital as urban renewal which is inevitable being standard practice the world over.
Akangbe spoke on The Landlords (The Radio Edition) with One Plot in Ibadan.
Surv. Akangbe however called for government intervention in mitigating the pressure on victims.
He implored government and the development partners to create an installment payment system similar to a-rent-to-own scheme especially for the affected occupants of the stalls when the time is right.
Speaking on the series ‘The Journey of a Surveyor: Tales from the Field’, Surv. Akangbe believes the advent of technology has impacted the built industry positively.
Specifically, he said it has reduced the number of personnel required at sites, consequently reducing the level of vulnerability and professional hazards.
The former General Secretary Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria Oyo State Chapter recalled how his team was nearly lynched while working on the site of La Campagne Resort, Lekki Lagos.
‘It was the Manager of the resort that rushed to appease the advancing mob who were armed with machetes’, he recalled.
