Ibadan – Following the Federal Government’s announcement of plans to construct bamboo houses for low and medium-income earners nationwide, a built industry expert, Builder Fatai Olugbade, has emphasized the need for caution and professional oversight in the implementation of the initiative.

The Director of Environmental Science Technology at the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Benadette Oguche, who represented the Permanent Secretary, Esuabana Asanye, disclosed the plan last Wednesday in Abuja during a Capacity Building Workshop on the Relevance of Bamboo for Climate-Smart Housing Construction.

Featuring on The Landlords – Radio Edition, Builder Olugbade, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Oyo State Chapter, noted that while the initiative is laudable, it must be executed under the strict supervision of professional builders or structural engineers.

“These are professionals who understand the nuances of building load requirements, sustainability, and the durability of bamboo,” he emphasized.

According to Builder Olugbade, “The constant increase in the price of cement and the uncertainties surrounding the quality of building materials have led to the search for alternative materials like bamboo, which can conveniently replace reinforcement bars in construction.”

Speaking further on the program’s theme, “Ibadan’s Real Estate Renaissance: Infrastructure, Investment, and the Future of Housing”, exploring how the evolving landscape of Ibadan is shaping new opportunities for both residents and investors.

He also highlighted several cementitious materials, such as Cub ash and Rice Husk, that can significantly reduce reliance on cement in building construction, especially in light of growing concerns around cost and environmental impact.
