Ibadan – Defence minister Badaru resigns on health grounds
Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru, has resigned from his position, citing health reasons.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in a statement released on Monday.
In his resignation letter, Badaru reportedly cited poor health as the reason for stepping down.
President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked the minister for his service to the nation.
A former two-term governor of Jigawa State (2015–2023), Badaru was appointed defence minister on August 21, 2023.
Vigilantes mistook Nigerien troops for hostile forces in Katsina border incident — DHQ
The Defence Headquarters has clarified the circumstances surrounding a border incident at Mazanya village in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State involving Nigerian local vigilantes and Nigerien troops on November 29, 2025.
A convoy of four gun trucks and a Toyota SUV carrying Nigerien military officers and soldiers had reportedly entered Mazanya to fetch water — a routine activity historically undertaken by troops from Niger.
However, the unusually large size of the convoy caused local vigilante members to misinterpret the movement as a potential hostile advance, prompting them to open fire.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said discussions between Nigerian security authorities and the Nigerien commander resolved the misunderstanding, allowing the Nigerien troops to complete their water-fetching mission and return to their side of the border without further incident.
DHQ convenes border security meeting over clash with Niger soldiers
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has convened a Joint Border Security Meeting, following Saturday’s clash between Nigerien soldiers and the Joint Nigerian security forces in Mazanya, a border community in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The Director Defence Media Operation, Major General Michael Onoja, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.
The meeting was aimed at consolidating liaison arrangements between Nigerian and Nigerien security forces and preventing similar occurrences in the future.
Some politicians funding terrorism in Nigeria – Former Chief of Defence Staff Irabor
Nigeria’s former Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor, has accused some politicians of funding terrorism in the country.
Irabor made the allegation on Monday while responding to questions in an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.
He was reacting to the recent wave of insecurity ravaging the nation, where bandits are bent on kidnapping innocent Nigerians, including children.
FG to expose terrorism financiers, tighten border security, says Presidency
The federal government will soon reveal the identities of terrorists and their financiers as part of sweeping security measures to disrupt funding networks sustaining violent groups across the country, presidential aide Daniel Bwala has said.
He revealed this during a live interview with TVC on Sunday night, where he addressed issues around Nigeria-US collaboration, the recent surge in attacks, and steps being taken to contain ravaging insecurity.
According to Bwala, terrorism has evolved into a threat that extends beyond national borders, ensuring that the government is working on exposing those financing terror in the country.
Northern governors suspend mining, back state police
Northern governors and traditional rulers have agreed to stop all mining activities in the region for six months, saying illegal mining is now a major source of insecurity.
This was part of a communiqué issued after a joint meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council (NTRC) in Kaduna.
The meeting was chaired by Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe and attended by all 19 northern governors and leaders of the traditional councils.
The communiqué said the North is facing rising insecurity, including killings and abductions in Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Sokoto, Jigawa and Kano states, as well as new Boko Haram attacks in Borno and Yobe.
Abbas denies role in NASC building contract, says SERAP’s allegation misleading
The Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives has described as misleading the claim by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project that the Speaker owes Nigerians an explanation regarding the N18.6bn allocated for the construction of the National Assembly Service Commission headquarters building in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, said he has no role in the award, supervision, or payment of any contract for the National Assembly or its agencies.
Osun Gov Adeleke resigns from PDP
The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has resigned his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as political parties commenced 2026 gubernatorial primaries.
This is coming barely 12 hours when the Osun State Chairman of PDP, Sunday Bisi said Adeleke will not pick the party re-election ticket over national leadership crisis.
The letter of resignation by Adeleke, was addressed to the PDP chairman of his Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, Ede, Osun State, which was dated 4th November 2025.
Accord opposition same treatment as Guinea-Bissau’s Da Costa, PDP tells Tinubu
The Peoples Democratic Party has urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure that opposition figures in Nigeria enjoy the same level of protection he recently extended to the opposition presidential candidate in the just-concluded Guinea-Bissau election, Mr Fernando Dia Da Costa.
The call follows the Federal Government’s announcement—through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and his Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Alkasim Abdulkadir—that Tinubu approved asylum and security protection for Da Costa to shield him from threats to his life and to “safeguard the democratic aspirations of the people of Guinea-Bissau.”
Nigeria grants asylum to Guinea-Bissau opposition candidate
The Nigerian embassy in Guinea-Bissau has granted asylum to Fernando Dias da Costa, the country’s opposition presidential candidate, following alleged threats to his life after last week’s military coup, The Cable Reports.
The coup was announced by military officers on Wednesday, just days after Guinea-Bissau’s presidential election in which both incumbent President Umaro Embaló and his main challenger, da Costa, claimed victory before official results were released.
Nigeria condemned the takeover and urged an immediate return to constitutional order.
ECOWAS chair holds talks with Guinea-Bissau junta
The Economic Community of West African States Chairman and Sierra Leonean President, Julius Bio, said he has held talks with the military leadership of Guinea-Bissau, as regional efforts intensify to restore constitutional rule in the troubled West African nation.
In a statement posted on his X account on Monday, Bio said the engagement followed resolutions reached at an extraordinary session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council.
