Ibadan – The Supreme Court has affirmed the constitutional power of the President to declare a state of emergency in any state to prevent a breakdown of law and order or a descent into chaos and anarchy.
A split decision of six to one Justices of the apex court on Monday, upheld the President’s authority under the Constitution to proclaim a state of emergency and further held that, during such a period, the President may suspend elected officials, provided any such suspension is for a limited duration.
In the lead majority judgment delivered by Justice Mohammed Idris, the apex court held that, Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution empowers the President to adopt extraordinary measures to restore normalcy where a state of emergency has been declared.
Police commence enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has resumed the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy pending the final determination of the matter currently before the court.
The police said the decision followed a careful review of emerging security concerns and the need to ensure the safety of all citizens.
NPF said at no point did the court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the provisions of the law regarding the use of tinted glass on vehicles.

President Bola Tinubu on Monday disclosed how he built a coalition with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Tinubu said the coalition he built with the late Buhari led to the removal of a former President.
Buhari, Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress had worked against the reelection of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
Jonathan, who did just one term in office, lost the presidential election to Buhari and this was attributed to Tinubu’s influence then.
However, Tinubu, while recounting his political sojourn with Buhari, said his predecessor left behind a reputation of integrity.
‘Buhari will never rig election’ – Ex-DSS DG, Yusuf Bichi
Yusuf Magaji Bichi, former Director General of the Department of State Services, DSS,, on Monday stated that the late former President Muhammadu Buhari lacked any tendency to rig elections.
Bichi made the remark during the launch of Buhari’s biography, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, authored by Dr Charles Omole.
The former DSS chief commended President Bola Tinubu for continuing the legacies of commitment, purposeful leadership, democratic governance, and free and fair elections established by Buhari, saying, “President Buhari will never rig an election.”
One-party dominance threatens federal system, SANs warns
The Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria has warned that Nigeria’s federal system is under serious threat due to the dominance of a single political party, stressing that the judiciary must remain strong where opposition is weak.
BOSAN said the current political landscape has weakened federalism and virtually eliminated effective opposition, thereby placing greater responsibility on the judiciary to protect the constitution and the rule of law.
The body made the remarks in a speech delivered at a special court session marking the ceremonial commencement of the 2025/2026 Legal Year of the Federal High Court and the 41st Annual Judges’ Conference held in Abuja on Monday.
Currently, the All Progressives Congress controls at least 26 of the 36 states in the federation, with opposition parties decrying a tilt toward a one-party state.
Dangote names N739 as new petrol pump price
Barring any last-minute change, MRS and other partners of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery are set to begin selling petrol at N739 per litre.
This comes two days after the refinery slashed its petrol gantry price from N828 to N699 per litre. Speaking at a press briefing at the Lekki refinery on Sunday, the President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, said he was aware that despite lower gantry prices, some filling stations often choose to keep pump prices high, thereby sabotaging his efforts.
According to him, MRS would commence the sale of petrol at N739 per litre from Tuesday, while other partners would follow. Dangote alleged that some officials had met with certain marketers and encouraged them to keep prices high in order to frustrate the price reduction, stressing that he would fight to enforce the new price regime.
Police defuse bomb under network mast in Borno
Operatives of the Borno state police command on Monday defused an Unexploded Ordnance planted under a network mast at Chuskon, Federal Low Cost Area of Maiduguri.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Nahum Daso, indicated that the EOD-CBRN base 13 team made the recovery following a report received by the Divisional Police Officer ITE Police Division.
