Ibadan – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday reaffirmed that Nigeria’s new tax laws will commence on January 1, 2026, as scheduled, describing the reforms as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for the country.
In a statement personally signed by the President, he said the sweeping tax reforms were aimed not at raising taxes but at resetting Nigeria’s fiscal architecture, harmonising the tax system, and strengthening the social contract between the state and citizens.
“The new tax laws, including those that took effect on June 26, 2025, and the remaining acts scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, will continue as planned,” Tinubu said, stressing that the reforms are designed to support long-term competitiveness while protecting dignity and shared responsibility.
NNPC announces restoration of Escravos-Lagos pipeline
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the complete restoration of the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) in Warri, Delta State, following the recent explosion on the asset.
The chief corporate communications officer (CCCO) of the nation’s oil company, Andy Odeh, in a statement, said that the pipeline is fully operational, reiterating the company’s resilience and commitment to energy security.
“NNPC Limited is pleased to announce the successful restoration of the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System (ELPS) in Warri, Delta State.
“Following the unexpected explosion on December 10, 2025, we immediately activated our emergency response, deployed coordinated containment measures, and worked tirelessly with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the damaged section was repaired, pressure-tested, and safely recommissioned.
Court orders remand of ex-AGF Malami, son, wife in Kuje prison
The Federal High Court In Abuja on Tuesday ordered the remand of the Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing and determination of their bail application.
The trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, also ordered the remand of his co-dedendants, his son, Abubakar Malami, and one of his wives Bashir Asabe.
Justice Nwite made the order after taking arguments from the defence team led by Joseph Daudu (SAN) and the prosecution counsel Ekele Iheneacho (SAN).
Malami and his co-defendants are facing a 16-count money laundering charge preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Eagles thrash Uganda 3-1 in last AFCON group stage game
The Super Eagles of Nigeria continued their fine form at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a 3–1 victory over the Cranes of Uganda at the Stade Foot Fès, topping Group C with three wins in three.
The Eagles are the first team to win all their group games in the 2025 AFCON after they defeated both Tanzania and Tunisia before this game.
They took the lead in the 28th minute, with goal from striker Paul Onuachu who was handed his first start of the tournament, Raphael Onyedika scored a brace in the second half giving Nigeria a 3-0 lead, the lead was shortened in the 75th minute by Uganda’s Rogers Mato.
The Eagles have qualified for the round of 16 and Chelle’s men will look to continue their form.
Ooni of Ife appointed Chancellor of Kashim Ibrahim University
The Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council (SNTRC) and Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has been appointed as the Chancellor of Kashim Ibrahim University in Maiduguri, Borno State, which was formerly known as Borno State University.
The appointment letter was presented to the monarch on Tuesday at his Ile Oodua Palace in Ile-Ife. The presentation was made by Malam Bukar Tijani, the Secretary to the Borno State Government, who led a high-level delegation on behalf of Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum.
The delegation included the Vice-Chancellor of Kashim Ibrahim University, Prof. Babagana Guti, along with other senior government officials.
Speaking during the presentation, Malam Tijani conveyed the warm regards of Governor Zulum to the Ooni Ogunwusi, describing the occasion as historic and symbolic.
Rivers lawmakers return N100,000 transferred to their accounts by Fubara
Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have returned a N100,000 cash gift from the state governor, Sim Fubara.
The money was transferred to their personal accounts on the instructions of Fubara.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by Hon. Enemi Aabo George, chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints.
Confusion over Mutfwang’s defection: Plateau PDP claims he remains party leader
The Plateau State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang is still a member and leader of the party in the state, despite the pronouncement of Professor Nentawe Yilwtda, the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), that the governor has defected to the APC.
Recall that the APC National Chairman recently announced at the party’s NEC meeting in Abuja that the governor had joined the party, which was followed by a stakeholders meeting of the party in Jos, Plateau State, where the defection was openly acknowledged and endorsed.
Nigerian Tribune also learned that the APC in the state and at the national level has agreed to formally receive the government into the party before January 20th, 2026, at the Polo playing ground in Jos, the state capital.
The governor’s supporters have expressed concern about why he hadn’t informed the PDP at his ward, local government, and zonal levels, given that the reception is scheduled to take place in less than three weeks.
