Ibadan – Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has alleged medical negligence in the circumstances surrounding the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
ARISE News reported on Saturday that it reached out to Adichie’s media team, who confirmed she authored the statement detailing the incident. According to her representatives, the message was originally sent privately to family members and a few close friends.
In the statement, Adichie said her son was taken to Euracare Hospital for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line, during which he was sedated but was not properly monitored after being administered propofol, leading to complications including loss of responsiveness, seizures, and cardiac arrest.
She stated that her son “would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th,” where he was taken for medical procedures.
Adichie explained that her family had been in Lagos for Christmas when her son developed what they initially believed was a cold, which later “turned into a very serious infection.”
‘Invalid conclusions,’ Oyedele faults KPMG’s flagged ‘errors’ in new tax laws
The Chairman, Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has faulted the recent publication by KPMG on new tax laws, describing claims by the firm as “invalid conclusions.”
Oyedele, in a statement on Saturday, said the committee welcomes perspectives that contribute to a shared understanding and successful implementation of the new tax laws.
According to him, KPMG raised a few points that are useful, “particularly those related to implementation risks and clerical or cross-referencing issues. However, the majority of the publication reflected a misunderstanding of the policy intent, a mischaracterisation of deliberate policy choices, and, in several instances, the repetition of opinions and preferences as facts.”
Southeast APC endorses Tinubu for second term, pledges massive votes in 2027
Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southeast on Saturday endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office, pledging to mobilise massive votes for his re-election in the 2027 general elections.
The endorsement was the outcome of a high-level Southeast APC meeting at the Presidential Hotel, Enugu, where party leaders, Governors, lawmakers, elders and critical stakeholders from across the zone reviewed the region’s political trajectory and resolved to align fully with the ruling party at the centre.
Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is also the Chairman of the Southeast Governors’ Forum and Director-General of the APC 2027 election project, said President Tinubu had entrusted the political future of his re-election to the Southeast, describing it as both an honour and a responsibility.
Nigeria advance to AFCON semifinals, beat Algeria 2-0
The Super Eagles are advanced to the semifinals of AFCON 2025 after they beat the Desert Foxes of Algeria 2-0 in Marrakech.
The Eagles entered the match after a commanding 4-0 win over Mozambique in the Round of 16, having scored 12 goals in four matches, the tournament’s most prolific attack.
The Eagles dominated the first half against Algeria in the quarter-final clash, creating multiple scoring opportunities but struggling to break through the Desert Foxes’ resolute defence.
The first goal came in the second half from an header scored by striker Victor Osimhen, the lead was then doubled by his strike partner Akor Adams in the 57th minute.
Nigeria have booked their place in the last four and will face hosts Morocco in the semifinals.
AFCON 2025: BUA chairman pledges $500,000, other bonuses to S’Eagles ahead of semi-final clash
The Chairman and Founder of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has pledged financial rewards to Nigeria’s Super Eagles following their 2-0 victory over Algeria in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final.
In a statement posted on Saturday via his personal X handle, Rabiu congratulated the team, saying, “Congratulations to our Super Eagles players on a brilliant victory against Algeria! You have lifted the spirit of the nation, and we proudly cheer you on as you prepare for the semi-finals.”
He added incentives for the upcoming matches, promising, “To encourage you, I pledge USD $500,000 to the players upon winning the semi-final, with an additional USD $50,000 for every goal scored. Should you go on to win the final, I further pledge USD $1,000,000, plus USD $100,000 for each goal scored in the final.”

According the Ighalo, Osimhen needs to be angry for you to see the best out of him.
The Manchester United star spoke on SuperSport on Saturday as Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 in the AFCON quarter-final stage.
This comes after Osimhen recently had a heated argument with Super Eagles teammate Lookman Ademola during Nigeria’s 4-0 win against Mozambique.
However, both players have already settled their differences and were impressive against Algeria on Saturday.

Governor Otti who was speaking on Saturday at Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Umuoriehi, Umuahia North LGA, during the dedication of the church building, said that those who are gathering against him were the same people that failed to develop the state in the past.
Otti was reacting to an alliance formed against his re-election by former Abia governors Orji Uzor Kalu, Theodore Orji and Okezie Ikpeazu.
ECOWAS, G.Bissau junta discuss release of detainees, transition timelin
African leaders representing regional bloc ECOWAS held talks Saturday with Guinea-Bissau’s junta government on the release of detainees and the transition to constitutional rule, sources said.
They also met two opposition figures, one of whom is in detention and another who was forced to take refuge in a foreign embassy.
Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio, who currently holds ECOWAS’s rotating chairmanship, and Senegal President Bassirou Diomaye Faye met with officials from the country’s new ruling junta.
The talks were aimed at achieving rapid progress on the country’s transition back to constitutional order, a source close to Guinea-Bissau’s foreign ministry told AFP.
US launches ‘large-scale’ strikes against IS in Syria
United States and allied forces have carried out “large-scale” strikes against the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group in Syria, the US military said on Saturday, as part of a response to a December attack that killed three Americans.
The US said a lone gunman linked to the militant group carried out the December 13 attack in Palmyra — a city home to UNESCO-listed ancient ruins and formerly controlled by jihadist fighters — killing two US soldiers and a US civilian interpreter.
According to US Central Command, “The strikes today targeted ISIS throughout Syria” and were conducted under Operation Hawkeye Strike, which was launched “in direct response to the deadly ISIS attack on US and Syrian forces in Palmyra,” the command said in a statement on X, using an acronym for the jihadist group.
US Central Command noted that the latest operation follows an earlier round of strikes carried out last month by the United States and Jordan, which hit dozens of Islamic State targets across Syria.
The attack in Palmyra marked the first such incident since the overthrow of Syria’s longtime ruler, Bashar al-Assad, in December 2024.
