Ibadan – Proper mapping of Nigeria has been identified as a critical tool in addressing the nation’s growing insecurity challenges.
Speaking on The Landlords, The Radio Edition, Surveyor Omobolaji Akangbe, FNIS, lamented what he described as the relegation of the surveying profession despite its strategic importance to national development and security. He noted that Nigeria’s last comprehensive mapping exercise was conducted in the 1960s, leaving vast portions of the country inadequately documented.
According to him, modern surveying technologies can be deployed to identify and monitor security hotspots within and around urban centres, as well as assist security agencies in tracking and flushing out illegal occupants of forests and remote areas.
Surveyor Akangbe further expressed concern over the government’s failure to fully utilize the expertise of surveyors, town planners, and digital mapping systems for the accurate identification and numbering of buildings and structures across the country. He maintained that an effective geospatial database would not only improve urban management but also strengthen security operations, emergency response, and national planning efforts.
